The man who had allegedly murdered his 67-year old mother at Shivaji Park on Sunday was suffering from severe mental issues, police claimed on Monday. On Sunday, Tejas Sanghvi (40), a resident of Gokuldham Building in Dadar (W) allegedly hit his mother Rekha with a blunt object, resulting in her death. The neighbours heard Rekha's cry and informed the police about the incident.

According to the police, Sanghvi was suffering from a mental disorder due to which he had highly erratic and unstable behaviour. "Sanghvi reportedly did not come out of his house for eight months, did not go to work and did not even shave his beard. His mother was very upset about his behavior, and they used to fight regularly over this issue," said senior police inspector Ashok Jagdale of Shivaji Park police station.

"Sanghvi's family had advised him to seek medical help but he refused treatment. He did not have any major family or economic problems and was in a relatively good environment. The exact reason for his extreme behavior and assault can not be understood," added Jagdale.

Sanghvi was produced before the court on Monday which remanded him judicial custody till February 12. The police said that case is under investigation and a diagnosis of Sanghvi will be done to understand his mental state.
