The Shiv Sena has sought that the Eastern Freeway and the Mumbai-Nashik highway be re-named after party supremo late Bal Thackeray. It also wants the flyover landing outside Kamla Mills on Senapati Bapat Marg to be re-christened after senior leader and former assembly speaker Dattaji Nalawade.

Leader of the opposition Eknath Shinde and Sena leaders Diwakar Raote and Ramdas Kadam submitted a memorandum in this regard to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday. On Thackeray senior's second death anniversary on Monday, Fadnavis had promised a memorial of the late Sena chief in Mumbai and announced setting up of a committee under the chief secretary in this regard.

The Sena has sought that the re-naming of these roads be undertaken on his birth anniversary on January 23 next year. The Eastern Freeway, which has been constructed by the MMRDA, joins PD Mello Road in south Mumbai to Chembur and Ghatkopar.

The Sena wants the six-lane express highway from Thane to Nashik, which further connects Nagpur, to be renamed as the "Shiv Sena pramukh Balasaheb Thackeray Expressway." The party also wants the government to name the flyover from Pathardi to Adgaon Naka in Nashik after noted Marathi author and poet VV Shirwadkar aka Kusumagraj.
