Shiv Sena rally disrupts traffic in eastern suburbs for 12 hours

Vehicular traffic in the eastern suburbs was hit for nearly 12 hours on Thursday because of the Shiv Sena rally held at Somaiya ground. Till 10pm, there were jams from Mulund check naka up to Matunga.

The event that started at 2pm and ended by 4pm disrupted traffic movement till around 9.30pm.

There were  traffic jams in Sion, Priyadarshini till Chembur in the eastern suburbs and Bandra in western suburbs. Areas that were hit the most were Sion, Chembur, Chunabhatti, Dharavi and Matunga. The traffic police control said that extra policemen had to be deployed in Matunga and beyond.

Srikant, a resident of Chembur who had to come to Lower Parel, said: “The commute from Diamond Garden to Priyadarshini took more than 45 minutes. I had to get down from the cab and take another. I asked the cabbie to take the Eastern Freeway route. I had to pay Rs200 more but at least I got out of the traffic jam.”
