The brutal lathi-charge on Marathi speakers in Maharashtrian-dominated border areas of Karnataka has drawn an angry reaction from Shiv Sena and MNS. Sena, which has called this "terrorism as bad as that of Hafiz Saeed" said the "injustice affected" residents of these areas were looking to the strong leadership of prime minister Narendra Modi and home minister Rajnath Singh for justice.

"All political parties shed crocodile tears because the religious sentiments of an employee were hurt in the Maharashtra Sadan chapati case," said an editorial in Sena mouthpiece Saamna on Monday. The newspaper is edited by Sena president Uddhav Thackeray and has Rajya Sabha MP and spokesperson Sanjay Raut as the executive editor.

Noting that the Modi-led government had made a statement on the chapati issue in Parliament, the editorial said similar efficiency needed to be shown for Maharashtrians in border areas who were being meted out injustice by Karnataka.

"Kannadigas have their hotels and businesses in Mumbai and they have never been touched. But in areas like Belgaum, border dwellers are crushed under police boots everyday," Sena claimed, adding that it would never desert these people. It also attacked the Karnataka government for removing a board in Yellur village which claimed it was part of Maharashtra.

It charged that the Karnataka government was intent on wiping out all traces of Marathi from these areas. "...but these arrogant people in Karnataka must think of the repercussions if the mards in Mumbai-Maharashtra decide to behave in a similar manner," the editorial warned, ruing that no government took note of the problems faced by Marathi speakers in these areas.

Meanwhile, MNS chief Raj Thackeray said the assault was reprehensible and lambasted the Centre for not speaking out on the matter. He added that if people from outside states were assaulted in a similar manner in Maharashtra, it would have led to howls of protest.
