Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday alleged that Shiv Sena is sheltering water mafias and have given entry to Sharad Pawar, ex NCP corporator, whose brother was booked for water theft last week.

The BJP alleged that Pawar, who is husband of NCP corporator from Chandivali Sarita Pawar and his brother Santosh Pawar, is stealing water from civic pipelines. Newly-appointed Mumbai spokesperson Bhalchandra Shirsat said that BJP has demanded that municipal commissioner should ask police to register water theft crime under MCOCA as it is organized crime.

BJP leader Manoj Kotak urged the alliance partner to abstain from protecting such people as this will bring bad name to the party which is ruling at BMC and is also partner in state government. "Sharad Pawar joined Sena so that he can use his political clout to support his brother Santosh Pawar and Sena will be supporting his deed," said Kotak who has written to the municipal commissioner, seeking stricter and tougher law for water theft on the lines of MCOCA used for organised crime as police have no idea about which IPC will be applicable for water mafias for water theft.

Shirsat addressed the press for the first time after appointment as spokesperson in the BJP office in BMC headquarters. He said that Manoj Tiwari, BJP leader from Chandivali had exposed the theft and Pawar also assaulted Tiwari, following which the FIR was registered at Chandivali police station. "Water which is meant for tax payers is stolen by water tanker mafias. This is not only loss to public at large but also revenue loss for BMC as 27 per cent of unaccounted water goes waste every day. How can BMC allow such people to go scot-free when there is 20 per cent water cut in the city and here water mafias are merrily minting money," said Shirsat, adding that water stolen from civic pipelines is filled in tankers and sold at Rs1,800–2,000.

Recently, Kirit Somaiya had also exposed water theft in Marol and had registered FIR. Somaiya had alleged that water theft cannot happen without the help of civic officials from water department and the BMC officials should also be taken to the task. However, no action whatsoever has been initiated against the culprits.
