After launching a series of verbal attacks against ruling partner BJP on all crucial matters, the Shiv Sena has now put forth a demand of "gender responsive budget" before chief minister Devendra Fadnavis days ahead of budget session.

Draft of Sena's gender budget, which was submitted to the chief minister on Tuesday on behalf of Neelam Gorhe, senior Sena leader and member of the legislative council, seeks equal pay and equal rights along with an employment guarantee scheme for women in rural and urban Maharashtra.

The Sena has also demanded a special employment guarantee scheme and a health policy for women in drought-affected areas. The draft also seeks safe workplaces for women along with creches to support working mothers.

Other demands include counselling-cum-help centres for victims of sexual assaults in each hospital, fetching funds for state from the Central Nirbhaya Fund, rehabilitation scheme for women affected with domestic violence, setting up of a high-level task force to oversee the creation of network of toilets for women.

Underlining popular schemes of "Smart Cities" and "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" launched by prime minister Narendra Modi, the draft budget highlights the importance of gender budget demanding that all ministries must focus on women and allocate funds for their uplift.

There has been a long pending demand of gender budget by women legislatures, including Neelam Gorhe who has been vocal about the issue. Now, since Sena is itself part of the government, Gorhe hopes that her proposal would be considered.

Some of the corporations like BMC have a separate gender budget, bu the state government is yet to take a call on it though it had accepted it in principle.

"Women-centric budget planning is important if we really want to empower them. Most of the women-related schemes are either poorly implemented or just lying on papers due to callous approach of the related departments or due to lack of budget. Our proposal seeks to bridge this gap," Neelam Gorhe told dna.
