Criticising chief minister Devendra Fadnavis for his remarks on "tolerance" made during the Marathi sahitya sammelan (literary meet) at Pimpri, the Shiv Sena said India was a tolerant nation considering the red-carpet welcome it gave to Pakistanis despite the neighboring country's acts of violence against it.

An editorial on Monday in the Shiv Sena's organ Saamna, which has party president Uddhav Thackeray as the editor and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut as the editor, referred to how former Pakistan foreign minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri had been given a red-carpet welcome in Mumbai during his book launch.

"Hindustan must show tolerance and ensure proper mehmannawazi of Pakistanis even if they leave us in a bloodied state and kill our innocent people in terror attacks. If this is tolerance, then India is tolerant and will continue to be so…" it added, stating that the Sena's opposition to ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali's concert in Mumbai had led to states like West Bengal, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh felicitating the ghazal maestro.

The Sena opposes cultural and sporting ties with Pakistan considering the country's role in fomenting terrorism and organised crime in India and had opposed the release of Kasuri's book: "Neither A Hawk Nor A Dove" in Mumbai in October.

On the same morning, senior journalist Sudheendra Kulkarni, who is chairman of the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), and the event's organiser, had black paint thrown on him by Shiv Sainiks, who had threatened to disrupt the event. However, though the launch passed off peacefully in unprecedented security, it bared the faultlines between the Sena and the BJP.

"Pakistani terrorists had attacked our air base at Pathankot and our jawans were martyred while fighting there… at the same time some naïve politicians were organising Pakistani Ghulam Ali's welcome and felicitation," the editorial in the Sena mouthpiece charged.
