Following chief minister Devendra Fadnavis's proposal that the Maharashtra state assembly's monsoon session be held in Nagpur, Shiv Sena ministers have evoked the deluge of July 26 and said that during monsoon, the elected representatives cannot stay out of Mumbai for more than a month.

CM Fadnavis has formed a group of three ministers — parliamentary affairs minister Girish Bapat, Finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar and industries minister Subhash Desai — to finalise whether the monsoon session be held in Mumbai or Nagpur. A political observer noted, "Ahead of Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, CM Fadnavis is batting for Nagpur as it is his hometown and he wants to show the people of Vidharbha that he can change the dynamic of state politics if he is the head of state. Besides, he plans to pacify the growing unrest in Vidarbha against the BJP over the bifurcation of the state."

Meanwhile, Sena leaders feels that the monsoon session in Nagpur can damage their prospects in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai. Senior Shiv Sena leader and minister Eknath Shinde said that they are against the proposal.

"July and August are the crucial months for Mumbai. People have not yet forgotten the 2005 deluge. Mumbai is the island city, so under any condition, we cannot afford to stay out of Mumbai for a month," Shinde said.

He added, "If something untoward happens, we have to rush and take care of the situation. We need to be sensitive towards public safety. If at such crucial times, we are in Nagpur, what will people think about us?"

Another Sena leader said that the BJP, particularly CM Fadnavis, want to score political points by holding the monsoon session in Nagpur. "However, we will not agree with him. And we are sure the way they changed their stand about MESMA against nursery teachers, they will change the stand here," said the Sena leader.

However, a senior BJP minister who is part of the committee said that they are not interested in holding the session in Nagpur. "Mumbai is convenient to all and is the capital of Maharashtra so majority of sessions have to be happen here only."
