Share of Railways in funds for MUTP is Rs 703 cr

Of the Rs 51,000 crore doled out in the Budget for the implementation of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project, the railways has received Rs 703 crore, government documents released on Tuesday.

For Mumbai, the Union Budget has set aside Rs 519 crore, the maximum, to the newly started MUTP-3 project. This includes quadrupling of Virar-Dahanu, new corridor on Panvel-Karjat, new elevated corridor of Airoli-Kalwa, 565 AC coaches for Mumbai and projects to check people from crossing tracks.

For the first time, a special 'Umbrella Fund' has been created. The bulk fund is to be used for building foot and road over bridges, escalators and raise platform height.

The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation, the implementing authority, that is implementing this project said that they received Rs 181 crore for the ongoing MUTP-2, which includes 5-6 lines on Thane-Diva, Mumbai Central-Borivali 6 lines and CSMT-Kurla 5-6 lines.

"We have received Rs 1 crore for MUTP-3A in this budget. It is yet to get approval from different agencies," said R Khurana, Chairman and Managing Director, MRVC.

Meanwhile for the first time the railways have received an umbrella fund amount where all safety related works like having FOBs, ROBs and other works will be carried out. The CR and WR together have received Rs 900 crore for FOBs. They will also be redeveloping railway stations for which both railways have got Rs 1215 crore.
