Former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday said that Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar must have informed the then union home minister that there was a conditional offer to surrender by underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

Replying to a question on the recent statement by Pawar on Dawood's offer to return to India and surrender, Chavan informed media persons that he did not have first-hand information on this issue. During the press conference, Chavan said that he was not aware as to what exactly Pawar has said on this, but based on whatever has appeared in the media, the NCP chief must have apprised the union home minister about it before taking any decision.

"Since it was not a small decision, and was not only confined to Mumbai but was a matter of concern for the entire country, I am sure Pawar must have told about it to the then union home minister," said Chavan.

Replying to another question on the issue, Chavan said that when he was the chief minister of the state, this subject never came to him. He added that he was neither aware of whether this subject had come to the home minister during his tenure as the chief minister.

Pawar on Saturday had made it clear that there was an offer to surrender by Dawood Ibrahim when Pawar was the chief minister. The offer, he said, had come through Ram Jethmalani but since the offer was on the condition that Dawood should not be arrested on arrival in Mumbai, his government rejected it.

When asked what can be done about the offer now, Chavan replied: "You should ask about it to the current home minister. But when the current home minister is not capable of bringing back Lalit Modi, how can he bring back Dawood Ibrahim," he commented.
