The Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar had recently held a meeting of senior party leaders to draw a plan so that their members are elected to the upper House.

State Legislative Council chairman Ramraje Nimbalkar and Opposition leader Dhananjay Munde's terms are ending in July. However, as per the quota and strength of the NCP, they can get only one member elected to the upper House. To get another member elected, they would need strong support of the Congress party.

Sources said that NCP is already in talks with the Congress to get support for both the chairman and opposition leader's posts. However, Congress has not yet taken any decision on the matter.

A senior Congress leader said that his party is unhappy since NCP had pulled out its support to unsettle Congress chairman of the upper House Shivajirao Deshmukh in March 2015 and replaced him with NCP candidate Ramraje Nimbalkar.

Ten seats from the elected MLA constituency in the upper house are getting vacant on July 7. On the other hand, Congress leaders Narayan Rane and Harshvardhan Patil are also trying to get in the fray so that they can make the Congress voice stronger in the upper House where NCP has an upper hand.

Ramraje Nimbalkar, Prakash Binsale and Dhananjay Munde (all NCP), Deepti Chaudhari and Muzaffar Hussain (both Congress), Shobhatai Fadnavis and Vinayak Mete (both BJP), minister for industries Subhash Desai and minister for public transport Diwakar Raote (both Sena) and Vijay Sawant (Independent) will retire on July 7.
