Zone III of Mumbai police, which comprises Tardeo, Worli, Nagpada, N M Joshi Marg, Agripada and Byculla police stations, have devised an innovative plan to improve patrolling in their area. The move comes in the awake of the Peshawar massacre and the subsequent alert issued by various intelligence agencies.

The police stations in this zone have important places of worships, malls and offices in their jurisdiction. As per the new strategy for patrolling, all police vehicles, i.e. beat marshals, constables, police patrolling van as well as charlies (woman beat marshals) will be patrolling various areas at different times of the day. Officers of all six police stations carried out a study in their respective jurisdictions and collected data about the crimes in their areas. The survey conducted took various factors into consideration before demarcating a particular place for patrolling.

"We carried out the study and took factors like footfalls in a particular area at a particular time of the day, the pattern of crimes in a particular place, and the sensitivity of the area before devising the plan," said deputy commissioner of police (Zone III) S Jaykumar. He added, "We have identified places like station, malls, religious places and educational institutions in our area where there is need of patrolling at a particular time and we have implemented it."

According to an officer, more police personnel will be positioned near stations during peak hours, as well as outside colleges during the time classes begin and end. On weekends, police will be doing patrolling outside malls.

DCP Jaykumar said, "The idea is to increase police presence in the jurisdiction so that crime can be reduced and the citizens can be assured that there is law to protect them." He added, "When a criminal sees a police on the road, it acts as a deterrent. We are hoping that we will get good results with this exercise."
