The authorities of Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) have been mulling over conducting a counselling session for its drivers and conductors to increase their efficiency. They have zeroed in on this decision after taking several measures to make the bus service commuter-friendly, which greatly affects the drivers and conductors.

The counselling session will be aimed at preventing them from going under depression and increasing their efficiency. The session is likely to begin in the coming year.

In the last few months, the authorities had taken several steps and made it clear to their staff that misbehaving with commuters and negligence of duty will not be tolerated. Anwar Shaikh, the chairman of transport committee himself put up his mobile number on every bus so that commuters can directly contact him in case they have any complaint regarding NMMT buses.

dna of navi mumbai had first published an article on January 29, 2012, highlighting the need of such sessions with psychotherapists and neurologists for drivers and conductors.

“We are planning to start the counselling session next year as it will help them bring down their depression level,” said Shaikh, adding, “They work under tremendous pressure, from traffic jams to work schedules.”

It is recalled that a mentally disturbed bus driver of the state transport (ST) department hijacked an empty bus and mowed down ten people and injured over 25 in Pune last year. Since then, the need of such counselling has increased.

According to Shaikh, the session will be conducted once or twice in a month and drivers’ and conductors’ problems will be heard and the authority will find a solution. “Their well-being is important as they execute a very difficult job everyday,” said Shaikh.

However, Shaikh has made it clear that quality service of NMMT will not be compromised. “We will take steps to ensure the wellness of our drivers and conductors but they have to execute their services with honesty,” added Shaikh.

A city resident believes it to be frustrating to make way through traffic jams. “I often lose patience while driving my car through the traffic jams. I wonder how frustrating it must be for heavy vehicle drivers. This can lead to some or the other kind of psychological problems in the long run,” Umesh Jadhav, a resident of Koparkhairane said.
