A five-year-old male tiger is all set to call Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) its home beginning this month. The 'problem' tiger was rescued from Bhandara district in December after it had entered a village. It was also seen entering another village, close to the Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh border, during a wedding function.

While the tiger is currently at the Gorewada rescue centre in Nagpur, it will likely be brought to Borivali by the second week of February. SGNP officials said that this new male may also help in increasing the park's tiger population as it has been long since a young male tiger had called it home.

"This will be the eighth captive tiger in the park and the fourth male. The current three males belong to one family hence having a new male will help bring a new lineage," said Dr Shailesh Pethe, Veterinary Officer, SGNP.

The last big cats to be brought to SGNP were two tigresses from Pench, who were rescued as cubs in 2009, from the forest at Chandrapur. They were raised with the intention of being released into the wild. However, those efforts failed and both the eight-year-olds were sent to the park. Before that, the park got another tigress called Beauty in December 2014 which died in May 2015 after developing an infection.

"Necessary permissions have been granted and now all that remains is our team visiting Gorewada and bringing the tiger," said a senior official from SGNP, adding that on its arrival, the tiger will be kept in quarantine for a month and then shifted to the tiger safari for tourists.

As per another forest official, the tiger was declared a 'problem' animal and a team of experts decided not to release it back as it would frequent human settlements giving rise to chances of a conflict.
