Palash, the 13-year-old Royal Bengal tiger at Borivali's Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), who was diagnosed with acute renal failure is in critical state.
SGNP officials said they are doing everything possible to ensure the tiger makes a complete and healthy recovery. They added that Palash has not been eating food for about eight days now and chances of survival seem bleak.
SGNP veterinary officer Dr Shailesh Pethe said Palash stopped eating food from September 25 (Sunday). "It is normal for tigers to skip one meal daily. When Palash refused to eat the second meal, we began basic treatment. A blood test was conducted on Wednesday, which revealed that his serum creatinine value shot up to 31 mg, indicating acute renal failure," said Pethe. He added Palash was put on saline and treatment for renal failure was initiated.
"Though Palash is drinking water and passing urine, he has been skipping meals," said Pethe. The 13-year-old tiger was brought in from Van Vihar Zoo in Madhya Pradesh in 2006.
Shailesh Deore, superintendent of Lion and Tiger Safari, said necessary care is being provided to the ailing big cat. "We conducted a meeting with an expert advisory committee from Bombay Veterinary College. We will implement their suggestions," he said, adding that Palash is weak and looks exhausted.
SGNP currently has eight captive tigers, including a lone white tiger.
