Still reeling under the after-effects of the massive flooding that occurred inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) on August 29, officials have not only begun carrying out structural audits of some of the bridges located inside the park but have also written to BMC suggesting that a similar inspection be carried out at the Tulsi lake dam, which is over 100 years old.

One of the major reasons blamed for the flooding of SGNP was the reverse flow of Tulsi lake. Anwar Ahmed, Chief Conservator of Forest (CCF) and Director of SGNP, said that due to the force of the river even several road surfaces gave way. "We are concerned as the park has never experienced such intense flooding; nor has it seen such heavy flow of the Dahisar river. Hence, we are getting the audits of the four bridges in the park done. Since the flow of the river starts from Tulsi whose dam is very old, we have even suggested that even BMC carries out its share of checks and audits of the dam, which is under their department," he said adding that there was intense flooding yet again on September 20.

Ahmed informed that inspections of around 20 structures that include the CCF office as well as other official and residential structures where flooding occurred, will also be carried out.

Meanwhile, staff at the CCF office has been working overtime to recover the documents that were soiled due to the floods. "Around 70 per cent of the files that includes survey reports, land records, maps and other important documents have been affected in the flooding, and of this 80 per cent has been retrieved and around 20 per cent of documents might have been lost. Not only our staff but also the reserve staff that we have pooled in are working extra hours to go through every page found and document it in new files," informed another senior SGNP official adding that the biggest problem they were facing was drying the documents.
