Commercial sex workers from Nagpada’s red light area have helped the police nab a man who came to Mumbai from West Bengal last week to force his wife into prostitution.

“We have arrested Lallan Ayub Sheikh, 24, who hails from Murshidabad in West Bengal and rescued his wife Ayesha, 21, (name changed to protect her identity),” said senior police inspector Sanjay Kadam of the Nagpada police station on Tuesday.

While she has been sent to the mahila sudhargriha at Chembur, Sheikh has been arrested on charges of kidnapping and under relevant sections of the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act. He has been remanded in police custody till October 24.

“When they reached Mumbai last week, Sheikh took Ayesha to a hotel in Kandivli and stayed there for a few days. But, whenever Shaikh used to leave the room, he used to lock the door from outside. On Sunday, the couple were to meet someone at 2am near Alisha Hotel in Shuklaji Street at Kamathipura,”  said another officer from Nagpada police station.

As the meeting was fixed at such an odd hour and in such a locality, Ayesha got a little suspicious.

“Her doubts bolstered when she heard Sheikh speak with someone over phone about forcing her into prostitution. She got scared and started crying. A few commercial sex workers, who were standing nearby, were watching the couple and sensed something amiss. They immediately informed the police,” the officer added.

“I saw the woman sitting on the footpath and crying. I asked her why she was crying in Hindi, but she did not understand what I was saying. I suspected foul play and informed the police,” said Salma (name changed), 32, a commercial sex worker.

The police arrested Sheikh, who during interrogation, said they were married for the last three years. He reportedly told the police that they had come to Mumbai to see the city, but he soon ran out of money and so brought her to Nagpada to sell her to a brothel.
