A conservancy worker died, while another slipped into unconsciousness for a few hours, while they were cleaning a drainage at Sassoon Docks in Colaba on Tuesday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Ahmed Ansari. According to the Colaba police, at around 1:30 pm three workers went inside a 10-feet drainage pipeline to clean up the sewage. Two of them fell unconscious due to the poisonous gas in the drainage.

The police, with the help of the locals, pulled out the two workers from the drainage and rushed them to St George Hospital. While Ansari was declared dead on arrival, the other worker is still under treatment .

“Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT), which is doing the development works of the docks had given work of cleaning the drainage to a contractor who did not take up the required safety measures. We have registered a case of causing death due to negligence against the contractor,” said a police officer.
