The state government has terminated the services of 55 medical officers who have been absent from duty for a long period.

Health minister Dr Deepak Sawant admitted this in a written reply to a question by Amit Vilasrao Deshmukh (Congress-Latur city) and others in the state legislative assembly on Friday. Sawant said this action was taken in February and added that instructions had been given to fix responsibility on those officials and employees who had not intimated their seniors about the illegal abstention of these medical officers.

A separate selection board had been constituted and based on their recommendations, a total of 647 candidates have been appointed as medical officers (Group-A).
