The city crime branch sleuths on Thursday arrested a 38-year- old Navi Mumbai resident on the charge of molesting a married woman from Vile Parle. The suspect, identified as Ravi Verma, posed as a police officer and called up the woman claiming that her husband was found involved in a sex scandal. He then asked her to meet him and molested her. According to the police, Verma committed such crimes earlier too.

According to additional commissioner of police Rajvardhan Sinha, the woman had approached the Vile Parle police on February 7. She told the police that she received a phone call from an unknown number and the caller claimed to be an officer from Pune's cyber crime branch.

"As per the woman, the caller threatened to arrest her husband as the latter was found involved in a sex scandal. He then called the victim near Raghuleela Mall in Vashi, took her to an isolated place, hurled abuses at her and molested her," said additional commissioner of police KMM Prasanna.

A case was then registered in this regard at Vile Parle police station against an unknown person under section 170 (impersonation), 354 (a) (stalking), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code, said deputy commissioner MM Dahikar.

"Investigation revealed that the mobile phone and SIM card used to make the call were stolen. We even went through similar cases registered in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Pune since 2001," said assistant commissioner of police Sunil Deshmukh.

During investigation, senior inspector Deepak Phatangare received specific information that the suspect involved in the crime would be arriving in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. A trap was laid by officers Sunil Mane, Raju Kasbe and Sudhir Dalvi and he was apprehended.

"The suspect works as an estate agent in Navi Mumbai. Earlier too he had posed as CBI, crime branch and cyber crime officers and molested women. He has 14 such cases registered against him in Delhi, Pune, Thane, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai," said a police officer.
