The National Green Tribunal has asked the Trimbakeshwar Municipal Council to complete the separation of river Godavari and the sewerage in the temple town by May-end. It has also set the same deadline for the civic body to complete the biomethanation plant to treat solid waste.

Hearing a public interest litigation filed by environmentalists Lalita Shinde, Rajesh Pandit and Nishikant Pagare regarding pollution in Godavari river on Tuesday, the tribunal panel of justice VR Kingaonkar and judicial expert Ajay Deshpande questioned the civic body on the status of the separation work of the river and sewerage. The council assured the panel that the work would be completed by the first week of May. However, the tribunal gave the civic body an extended period of 20 days setting up a deadline of May 28.

The panel also questioned the municipal council on the status of the biomethanation plant. The deadline for completion of this project has also been set up as May 28. The same deadline has been set for identifying the blue line of river Godavari in Trimbakeshwar.

These projects in the temple town are important keeping in mind the approaching Kumbh Mela. The mega religious event will be held at Trimbakeshwar and Nashik in August.

"According to mythology, Kumbh Mela revolves around the separation of amrut — holy waters — from the poisonous or unholy waters of the sea. If we consider it in today's terms, the separation of the river and sewerage signifies the same. If this is achieved in Trimbakeshwar, then the holiness of the event will be preserved. This is the first step in making Godavari pollution free," stated Rajesh Pandit, one of the petitioners.
