In separate incidents, robbers targeted two senior citizens – one in Dombivli and the other in Kalyan – in broad daylight on Tuesday and took away cash and valuables collectively worth nearly Rs4 lakh.

In Dombivli, 75-year-old Chirayut Andrews was on his way to buy newspaper near railway station in the evening when a person approached him. Claiming that he knew Andrews, the man started talking to him and took him to an isolated place. He then asked Andrews to hand over cash and jewellery.

While Andrews said he did not have anything on him, he later realised that the man had made him take out four rings worth Rs1.25 lakh. Though he went to the police, he could not describe the man.

In Kalyan, claiming acquaintance, three men stopped 70-year-old man Bhatu Namdev Choudhary when he was riding a bike. While two of them kept him engaged in talks, the other took out cash and jewellery worth Rs 2.64 lakh from him.

Choudhary realised that he had been robbed only after passersby asked him to park his bike on one side of the road.

Police from both the suburbs said such incidents are on the rise in the area. "We have formed a team to nab the culprits," said an officer from Dombivli police station.

Unconfirmed sources said in both cases, the victims were hypnotised before being robbed.
