The special women's court presided over by judge Vrushali Joshi on Friday convicted a 78-year-old man in a rape case slapped against him in 2011. The court sentenced the man to ten years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs10,000.

Narshi Katira, the accused, has also been convicted under section 292 (a) of Indian Penal code (IPC), which pertains to possession of obscene content. Katira has been asked to deposit Rs50,000 to the court — Rs25,000 each for two of his victims.

The prosecution's case dates back to November 2011, when the accused, a resident of Mulund, was arrested by Mulund police for possessing compact discs (CD) with pornographic contents and for raping two minor girls. The accused was working as a freelance photographer.

The matter came to light when a teacher of the two girls saw them making some sketches. When confronted, they revealed what had happened with them. He then recorded their statements and submitted it before the Mulund police. The police raided the residence of the accused and found a bunch of CDs. The police had also seized a CD where the accused recorded his sexual act with a young woman.

The prosecution claimed that evidence given by both the victims were strong and they had identified the accused before the court.

According to the prosecution, the accused had first lured the two girls by offering them chocolates. He then befriended the two and got acquainted with their father. Later he told him to send the girls to his house so that he could explain to them how to handle the camera. Accordingly, the two started visiting his place, but on the pretext of teaching photography, he raped them on several occasions. He threatened them to not to disclose it to anyone saying if they did so he would circulate their pornographic videos on the Internet.

The police had also a woman named Heena Shah for allegedly abetting the rape. Heena knew the victims as they used to go to her residence for dance classes.
