A 62-year-old man looking for a flat has been duped by a broker to the tune of Rs 20 lakh. The complainant, Mahesh Mayor, a Regional Transport Office (RTO) agent told the Dahisar police that accused Tapos Chatterjee, had promised to give him a Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) flat for Rs 90 lakh. Chatterjee allegedly took the Rs 20 lakh advance from him but did not allot the flat to him.

Police said Mayor has been living in Dahisar for past four decades. In 2017, he was looking for a bigger flat for his family. Mayor was told by Amar Shah, a developer that Chatterjee is a professional broker and he had influence in MHADA. In July 2017, Chatterjee showed a 3 BHK MHADA flat at Shailendra Nagar, Dahisar to Mayor from the outside and told him he forgot the keys. Mayor was asked to deposit Rs 20 lakh advance.

Chatterjee told Mayor that the flat was allotted to a Solapur-based woman, Kusum Jadhav. He was also shown documents. Mayor was assured that if he paid the amount the flat would be transferred in his name. Mayor paid via cheque and RTGS mode. "Chatterjee started making excuses to start the documentation. Mayor sensed there was something fishy," said a police officer.Mayor visited Chatterjee's Malad residence and learnt that he was not staying there. He also came to know Kherwadi police had registered a fraud case against him. Chatterjee in February 2018, gave a crossed cheque to Mayor but asked him not to deposit it to the bank unless he gives a final go. Later, the cheque was taken back and two cheques of ING Vysya Bank was given to Mayor to deposit them.

"ING Vysya Bank had already merged with Kotak Mahindra Bank and Mayor realised this late that the cheques hold no value. After realising that he was duped, Mayor lodged a police complaint this week. We have registered a case under section 34, 406 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code and we suspect that the accused operated this fraud at a bigger scale. The case is being investigated," the officer added.
