Vashi's Ramanlal Seth, a 72-year-old chartered accountant who was attacked by four suspected robbers at his residence in the early hours of Saturday, died in a private hospital on Sunday afternoon.

His 60-year-old wife Leela, who was also attacked by the culprits, is in a critical condition in the same hospital. Their family believes that murder and not robbery was the motive behind the attack on the elderly couple.

Ramanlal Seth stayed his wife Leela in a 3 BHK flat on the first floor of Chittod Garh CHS in Vashi, sector 16a. Their elder son stays in Dubai, and the younger son stays at Kharghar. Their daughter stays with her family in Pune. The couple had returned home from Satara just a few hours before the attack.

In the CCTV footage taken by the building's cameras, police have seen four persons wearing monkey caps and gloves breaking into the main door of the flat with an iron rod around 2.20 am on Saturday. Then the rod was used to beat the elderly couple on their heads. Some of their neighbours who learnt about the incident after three hours, admitted them to hospital.

"The culprits did not even touch the mangalsutra and the bangles my mother was wearing that night. Had they been robbers they would have taken all those after attacking my parents. Therefore we believe they had come only to kill our parents," said Amit Seth, the couple's son who stays at Kharghar.

The society has only one security guard and he works 24 hours a day. He was sleeping when the robbers entered the building, the police says.

The police are still clueless about the culprits.
