A whopping 98 per cent of 3,600 people who participated in a survey recently carried out by a Shiv Sena corporator feel that the Byculla Zoo's enclosures are way too small for the animals they house, while 86 per cent of them feel that the cages are not maintained well.

Fifty per cent of those who took he survey organised by Sena councillor Avkash Jadhav visit the Veermata Jijabai Bhonsle Udyan or Byculla zoo often. Jadhav's survey revealed that 79 per cent of the respondents feel that signages are not helpful enough and 61 per cent said the washrooms need improvement. Eighty per cent said the animals are well taken care of, while 17 per cent felt otherwise.

"When such a huge amount of money (Rs 325 crore) has been allocated for the zoo's revamp, it is important to carry out a social impact analysis first. Even if BMC decides to get exotic animals to the zoo, they should be kept in spacious enclosures and basic things like proper signages and sanitation facilities should be ensured," Jadhav said.

Thirty-seven per cent felt that BMC is maintaining the zoo to some extent, while 57 per cent were not sure if the zoo had sufficient staff and 37 per cent felt the zoo was not clean. Eighty per cent said that their visit to the zoo was enjoyable. Zoo director Anil Anjankar said, "The revamp plan has been planned at a national level taking the shortcomings of the zoo into consideration." He added that larger enclosures and washrooms were part of the master plan.
