In what is being seen as a conscious move to choose aggressive 'Sainiks' as heads of important civic committees who can stand their ground against any muscle-flexing by BJP members, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray's choices for these important posts have been described as 'unconventional' and 'dark horses' by many leaders within the party.

Ramesh Korgaonkar is the new Standing Committee chairman, Shubhada Gudekar will head the Education Committee, Anant Nar will head the Improvements Committee and Anil Kokil has been chosen for the BEST Committee. "They are dark horses. They are all unexpected selections", said a senior Shiv Sena leader.

"We know that the BJP has extended its support to us, but we are also aware about the fact that in the name of transparency, BJP will try to corner us each time. For this, Uddhav wanted aggressive members who are experienced enough to conduct the meetings. Korgaonkar, Gudekar, Anant Nar are a mix of both," said a senior Shiv Sena leader.

"Kokil is a new face, but he knows the ins and outs of the BEST administration since he has served the BEST undertaking for 36 years. He is also well connected with the union members. These leaders have always taken up the issues related to public rather than politics," the leader added.

He also said that members of all the statutory committees were selected such that they would not only mentor the new faces but would also ensure that the BJP does not succeed in dominating the committee proceedings.

The first salvo was fired by Korgaonkar on Tuesday, when he demanded the BMC audit report which has been delayed for more than four years.
