While the nation is celebrating the 69th Republic Day, a distraught family attempted suicide in Mumbai on Thursday.
The Mumbai Police detained family of Shamsher Khan, who attempted self-immolation during the Republic Day Parade at Shivaji Park in Mumbai’s Dadar area.
The family is seeking justice for Khan, who was taken to Nanalpeth police station on December 25, 2017. They say that the 33-year-old was brutally assaulted to death by the cops during custody.
Recalling family’s struggle, Khan’s brother Yasin said, ‘since past 13 months, we are fighting for the justice and met several ministers. We have also Chief Minister Devendra Fadanavis and Minister Dipak Kesarkar who promised us that justice, but nothing happened.’
Taking about the failed suicide attempt, Yasin said ‘We all decided to meet Governor on Thursday but we could not meet him. So we all decided to self-immolate for the justice.’
‘My brother was a car dealer in Parbhani and has three children. His wife and two children too were attempting to commit suicide,’ Yasin claimed.
The family was spotted by the police in Dadar. ‘When we inquired, the family claimed that they have not received a justice and wanted to self-immolate themselves in front of Governor of Maharashtra. We have found a bottle of kerosene and a knife from them which we have seized. No case has been registered in the matter,’ said a police officer from Shivaji Park police station.
The Shivaji Park police station has made a diary entry of the incident and has let off them.
