A security guard posted at the historical Shanwarwada, a palace of the 17th century Peshwa dynasty in Maharashtra, was found murdered, police said today.

A complaint filed by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) which maintains the palace relics, said the 39-year-old Santosh Salve, who was on night duty yesterday, was killed with sharp weapons while the locker in which the entrance fee
money is deposited was removed from the establishment.

The assailant, who apparently could not open the locker, subsequently abandoned it behind the palace, police who suspect theft to be the motive, said.

The sprawling rampart of the palace, a prominent landmark in the heart of the city which was the capital of the Peshwas, showcases a daily "light and sound" programme for tourists, unfolding the history of Maratha empire.

A popular belief still prevails among people belonging to older generation here who claim that they had heard heart rending shouts of 'Kaka Mala Vachva' (Uncle please save me), at midnight emanating from the relics where Narayanrao Peshwa, one of the last heirs to the Peshwa throne, was slain on August 30, 1773 by 'Gardis' (royal guards) in a contract killing ordered by his uncle, Raghoba, in a power struggle.

A massive portion of the palace was destroyed in a devastating fire in 1828, according to a historical account at Bharat Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal here.
