The police have sounded a state-wide alert and have asked the forces to be more vigilant on Friday, on the occasion of the 57th death anniversary of Bharatratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.

The day also marks the anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition.

According to the police, huge crowds are expected at Chaityabhoomi at Dadar on Friday to pay respects to Dr Ambedkar by road and rail from across the state. “The railway police has been asked to beef up their security and ensure no untoward incident takes place,” said a police officer.

“The possibility of terrorist elements taking advantage of crowds at the Chaityabhoomi cannot be ruled out. Apart from this, notorious elements might get involved in offences such as chain-snatching, eve-teasing, theft and pickpocketing and can create a law and order situation. Hence, police stations concerned have been asked to remain extra vigilant,” said the officer.

Besides deployment of additional personnel at Chaityabhoomi, officers from the Special Branch in plain clothes will monitor the situation.
