Indian Muslims for Secular Democracy (IMSD), a group of Muslims who have been taking up issues related to the Muslim community, slammed the protest rally by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board. In a press conference held at the Marathi Patrakar Sangh, the group said that such rallies "were giving the impression to people that the community is against the Supreme Court's orders". IMSD also announced that it will intervene in the SC on the hearing on polygama, nikhah halala and muta marriage and seek a ban on them.

"An impression is getting created that the community is against the Supreme Court orders all the time. After all Supreme Court judges are also human beings. Imagine what they must be thinking. They are prejudicing the SC. They have made a Tamasha out of the community. For them the community was in danger even when Congress was in power and is in danger now. We are still suffering from what happened then," said Hassan Kamal, a senior journalist.

Kamal was among the speakers who included Zeenat Shaukat Ali, an author, Nasreen Contractor and Feroze Mithiborwala, of IMSD Haseena Khan from Bebaak Collective. The group had diverse views on the bill that is being presented in the Parliament. While some felt that instant triple talaq should be penalised, others felt that should not be the case.

"There should be fine and jail of one year instead of three years. There should be some corpus set aside for victims and divorce should be only through the judicial process after giving the arbitration period of 90 days. Divorces should be done through fast track courts," said Zeenat Shaukat Ali.

Khan said that they were against penal provisions being introduced. "These are issues related to civil matters. Whether to bring criminal aspect should be doubly thought about," said Khan.

"We will be filing an intervention petition and seeking a ban on polygamy, nikah halal and muta marriage. These are not in Quran," said Mithiborwala. The group criticised the right wing of trying to hijack the issue. "They did not do anything for the women and hence have made them sit on the lap of right wing. AIMPLB does not represent Muslims. They represent Muslims only for political parties who look for votes," said Kamal.
