The second merit list of city colleges for students seeking admission in first year junior college through the online process was declared on Monday.

For the first time, this year, the cut-off for arts stream in reputed colleges has risen to 60% from the previous 40-50%. Overall, there has been a drop of hardly 1 to 2% in the cut-offs in the second merit list from the first. In some colleges, the drop in cut-offs is a mere 0.5%, said college officials.

Vice principal of Andheri's Bhavan's college Ramesh Deshpande said, "In reputed colleges like ours, the cut-offs in the second merit list have come down by 1 to 2%. In some minority colleges the cut-offs have come down by 0.5%; the reason, I believe, is that half of their seats have already been filled by those falling under the minority quota, hence, the number of available seats would be less."

"This year, even arts has shown a good cut-off compared to last year — from 40-50% in last year's second merit list to above 60% this year," he added.

Giving his take on why the cut-offs in the second merit list have not dropped much, principal of Jai Hind college, Churchgate, Ashok Wadia said, "This year many students have scored very high percentage. And the arts cut-off has remained higher than last year because many are opting for this stream. Many new courses have been started by the university, which students might be planning to go for."
