In a bid to encourage citizens to vote in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections, the state Election Commission has approached hotels and restaurants to provide incentives to voters. Mumbaikars can now avail of hotel and restaurant discounts on February 21 if they exercise their franchise.

Hoteliers and restaurant owners have assured the State Election Commission that they would do their bit to bump up voter turnout during polls. State Election Commissioner JS Saharia said they will be enlisting the help of hotel and restaurant associations to increase the voting percentage. Saharia said hoteliers have assured that they would provide discounts to voters who come out to vote on February 21.

Saharia said the voting percentage for municipal elections never crosses the 55 per cent mark, thereby becoming a cause for concern. The commissioner said the SEC will enlist the help of cooperative societies, educational institutions, airports, railways and social media to increase voter turnout. Saharia added that there are about 7-8 state government departments that are coming out with their own magazines to highlight the importance of voting and participating in the democratic process. Saharia said he will host a video conference with 700 colleges across Pune, Amrawati, Solapur and Nashik to appeal to youth to participate in the electoral process.
