Residents of the newly developed node Ulwe in Navi Mumbai will have to wait for five to six months to commute by train as the first phase of Belapur-Nerul-Uran line is likely to be completed only by May 2018. According to officials, currently, the track is being laid down and the construction work is in progress.
City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) which has been constructing railway stations assured that the first phase of the eight-km stretch from Nerul-Belapur to Kharkopar station will be completed by May next year.
The earlier deadline for the first phase was December 2017, which was then extended to March 2018. CIDCO officials said that it may take longer as sanctions from the Railway Board and Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) will also be required.
The ambitious Nerul-Belapur-Uran railway project is a joint venture project between CIDCO, the state government, and the Central Railway, which will provide direct access between Uran township, Jawaharlal Nehru Port and the newly developed areas near the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.
The 22.5-km rail line will have 10 stations, including Seawoods, Sarsangam, Targhar, Bamandongri, Kharkopar, Gavar, Ranjanpada, Nhava Sheva, Dronagiri, and Uran. “We have set a target to finish the first eight-km stretch by March 31, 2018. The work is in full swing, but it may get delayed by one or two months,” said AK Jain, public relations officer of the Central Railways (CR).
“The stretch between the eighth and eleventh km of the route from Nerul falls under the forest department and private land,” said an official from CIDCO.
He added that acquisition process is underway and it will be completed soon.
RISING COSTS
- The initial estimated cost of this railway project was Rs 495 crores when it was first planned in the mid 1990s.
- Due to the delay in implementation the cost rose to Rs 1,781 crores.
- The project has three major bridges, 29 minor bridges, 1 road-over-bridge and 10 road-under-bridges.
