"Continuing with the on-screen assessment for the upcoming winter exams would be a big mistake," said former Vice Chancellor of the University of Mumbai, Dr Bhalchandra Mungekar, at a press conference held on Wednesday.

With the university's winter session exams beginning from November 6, Mungekar said that if it continues with the on-screen evaluation system, similar glitches will occur yet again affecting the future of lakhs of students yet again.

"The system of on-screen evaluation is good. It however needs to be implemented in phases and the university is not prepared to do it completely at this point. Also, with its decision to retain the previous Agency MeritTrac, glitches are likely to occur again" he added. DNA had earlier highlighted about the delay in initiating action against MeritTrac despite a series of complaints.

Mungekar said that the Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao should be held accountable if the system fails yet again. " The government has still not taken any concrete action against VC Sanjay Deshmukh for this huge mess. No action is taken against the agency which was given the contract. How and why was the permission given to go ahead with the system yet again?"he asked.

He said that he would meet the governor on Friday and discuss the issue. "I will request the governor to intervene into this issue and some of the larger issues that the University is facing at the moment. Apart from the whole examination issues the university is grappling with some basic problems like absence of permanent bodies including the academic and management council and Senate along with temporary appointments to posts of the VC, Pro VC Registrar and exam controller."

About the decision to give average marks to 1,600 students, Mungekar said: "On what basis can average marks be awarded? Some students might be absent for a paper, some might have an ATKT. The same criterion cannot be used for all."
