Patents and software codes of Mumbai Monorail seem to be troubling Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officials. The authorities can neither remove the rolling stock agency nor excessively pressure it to meet the conditions to make all the Monorail trains fit for operations.

Malaysian firm Scomi Engineering has been unable to maintain the entire fleet of Monorail trains in Mumbai. It has erred on various counts, still MMRDA officials have been unable to get adequate equipment from the manufacturer to ensure that all the trains are fit for operations.

"Not all the parts are coming from Malaysia. There are local vendors here from whom several things can be bought," said a senior MMRDA official.

It is also hesitating to levy penalty and pull up the train manufacturer. "We want them to complete the project first, that's our priority," added the official.

Scomi Engineering holds patent for the design and certain technology of the Monorail train. Additionally, officials fear that the Malaysian company will be reluctant to share codes or passwords used for softwares installed in the Monorail system, in case another operator is appointed for better operation and maintenance.

This agency has to operate and maintain the fleet till 2017, after which their contract expires.

Sources shared with dna that the tool boxex fitted inside the aprons of the trains too need replacement as they have disintegrated or cracked. The tools from the boxes might even start falling off, therefore, they need urgent replacement.

The sorry state of maintenance is also due to financial distress that Scomi Engineering is facing. They are heavily into cost-cutting and have already sent several of their team members back to Malaysia. Moreover, its financial crunch has even resulted in delayed staff salaries for the last few months.
