The 6th Science Film Festival — organised in association with Vigyan Prasar, National Counsel of Science Museum (NCSM), ministry of culture and department of science and technology — was inaugurated at Nehru Science Centre on Tuesday. The event was chaired by veteran director Shyam Benegal and science film maker Dr Mike Panday.

Talking about the festival, NCSM spokesperson Sreekant Pathak said: "Films are a very good medium of communication and information sharing. The masses are very fond of cinema in India. However, science as a subject in films are seldom entertaining. Hence, this is a move which helps us create awareness, spread information and is yet entertaining."

The festival which will start from the February 15, will showcase 65 competitive entries. Entries have come in four categories: films by school children, entries from colleges, institutions/ organizations and individual science film-makers. Besides, 20 non-competitive science films will be screened as well.

The winners will be chosen among the 35 short-listed entries by a jury of eight people — chaired by Shyam Benegal. Other jury members include Amrut Gangar, Shama Zaidi, Aruna Rajepatil, Aseem Sinha, Aparna Vaish and Sabyasachi Bhattacharya.

Each category will have three winners where the first prize winner will get rich by Rs1.5 lakh. The winners will be announced on the February 13.

"Such an event is important because these films are of a very high standard and are educational in nature. Also, it motivates and encourages participants to pursue film-making by offering prizes to them. Hence, it has been very successful for the past six years," said Benegal.
