Government schools across the city have been asked to set up menstrual hygiene management plan among girl students under the Swachcha Bharat Swachcha Vidyalaya programme. The schools have been asked to interact with parents and conduct the UNICEF six session programme.
A government resolution in this regard was issued on October 27 for all schools in the state. The decision of organising this program was made after it successful implementation in schools other districts like Thane, Jalna, Ratnagiri, Aurangabad, Osmanabad, Ahmednagar and Sindhudurg with the technical support of UNICEF on menstruation hygiene management. A task force will be formed at the district as well as state level to keep a watch on the plan and progress of schools in conducting the menstrual hygiene management. Other than creating awareness among parents and students the schools will also have to provide different facilities for girl students to maintain menstrual hygiene, which will be assessed by the task force.
Welcoming the move, Prashant Redij, spokesperson of Maharashtra Principal Association, said, “In the past too teachers have been reasons for revolution, so this too will bring revolution in the society. “
Shalini Thackeray, General Secretary of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) which has donated sanitary napkins in 10 different schools, said, “It is important to create awareness among girl students, but I stress up on the point that sanitary napkins should be made under essential commodities and their price should not be increased.”
“NGO Citizens Association Child Rights (CACR) in partnership with UNICEF Mumbai is conducting MHM behaviour change intervention programs in 15 BMC schools across Mumbai. We will be imparting medically accurate information to adolescent girls on menstruation, usage of sanitary napkins their safe disposal,” said Dr Richa Singh NGO Citizens Association Child Rights, Co-founder and Director Projects.
