The Bhandup police on Wednesday arrested a 32-year-old school supervisor for allegedly raping a four-year-old kindergarten student in the school bathroom last week. The matter came to light after an NGO approached the police on Tuesday along with the victim's family who were initially hesitant to lodge an FIR fearing social stigma.

In which school did the incident take place?
According to the Bhandup police, the victim is a student in the Junior KG section of Mount Mary School in Bhandup West. The victim, whose father had gone missing a few years ago, is staying with her mother and her grandparents close to the school.

When did the alleged rape take place?
On December 9. On that day, the accused, identified as Kesari Upadhyay, also known as Chote Sir to the students, took the victim to the school's bathroom and allegedly forced himself on her. The child, unaware of what had happened to her, went home and narrated the incident to her grandmother, who initially ignored her.

When was the child taken to the hospital?
However, on December 10, the victim started experiencing pain after which her grandmother took her to a municipal hospital in Bhandup, which referred her to Rajawadi hospital. However, when the victim, along with the family, went to Rajawadi hospital, the child started getting impatient due to which her grandmother brought her back home.

Was she taken to the hospital again?
Yes, on December 12. The child started complaining of pain in the stomach and her grandmother took her to Rajawadi hospital. However, this time too they came back home without availing any treatment. They had waited in the line for a few hours, but the child was irritated and in no mood to wait, so her grandmother took her back home.

How did the social worker get to know about it?
On December 16, the grandmother confided about the incidents to some of her neighbours who alerted a local social worker. She then approached the family and convinced them to register a complaint with the police.

What do the police now say?
"We came to know that some social workers had approached the family. Then we started tracking the child's residence and later convinced the family to register a complaint, following which we arrested Upadhyay," said PR Chavan, senior police inspector, Bhandup police station. Chavan added: "We are shocked that both Bhandup hospital and Rajawadi hospital did not inform the police about the incident. It is mandatory that hospitals inform such cases to the police immediately."

Has the police booked the accused?
Yes. The Bhandup police have booked Upadhyay for rape, and under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (PCSOA).
