On Wednesday evening, a school student was attacked by an unknown youth near Charai, Thane. The 16-year-old girl was on her way back home from dance practice when the youth put chilly powder on her face. Fortunately, her eyes/ eyesight were safe and she managed to go to the police station and lodge a complaint.

On April 25, at around 8.15pm, Vrinda (name changed), a resident of Khopat, was returning home after her dance lessons at Charai. When she reached Mahadev Electronics Store near Naupada, a man in his 20s came from behind and threw red chilly powder on her face. "Luckily, the powder fell on her neck and did not affect her eyes," said a police official from the Naupada police station. After the act, the man, who is 20-21 years old and 5.6 feet tall, quickly fled from the spot.

Vrinda called her parents who then took her to the police station where they lodged a complaint against the unknown man. "The girl says that she does not know the person nor has she ever seen him," the cop said. The cops say that probably the girl knew the man, but is not forthcoming about it. "The motive about this sudden mirchi attack is not known as the girl is not telling us anything about the attacker," he said.

The police is, however, hopeful of catching the culprit soon. "We have got CCTV footage of the incident and will be able to trace him soon," the cop said. In the meanwhile, cops have registered a case under section 354 (sexual harassment) against an unknown person.
