Parents of children studying at St George School, Model Town, Mulund, have alleged that the school has been functioning without an affiliation from the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), which has threatened the future of several students.

According to the parents, the school had claimed to be affiliated with the CISCE and the students have been following the curriculum up to class VIII. However, when the first batch of students completed class VIII this year, the parents were asked to shift to the school's state board section or change the school. "At the end of the year, the school told us our children had not fared well in the entrance test which determines if they are eligible for appearing for the ICSE board exams and hence, we will either have to shift them to the school's state board section or move to another school in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai," said an aggrieved parent. The council does not conduct any such entrance examination.

The parents have approached the local police station for action against the school. "They have cheated us by taking the admission fee for ICSE school. They informed us on April 3, that our children have not been given an admission in ICSE school and have challenged us. They are not ready to refund the fees neither are they ready to give admission. The school is running classes from nursery to VIII (ICSE) without permission of the government which we came to know today," said the parents in their complaint.

A complaint has also been sent by Rakesh Shetty of National Youth Trade Union Congress on behalf of the parents to the National commission for Protection of Child Rights. In his complaint, Shetty said, "…When these students passed their VIII examination and tried to secure admission in standard IX, the school administration blatantly denied admission to them in spite of having collected the requisite fees citing the reason that their school does not enjoy any affiliation/recognition with the ICSE board… Over and above, the school administration disgracefully informed the parents of these children to transfer their wards to Maharashtra State Board for Secondary School or secure admission in another institution owned by them in Kharghar."

School authorities could not be reached for comment.
