To overcome the blood shortage, the State Blood Transfusion Council (SBTC) has ordered city-based blood banks run by the government to conduct blood donation camps at various railway stations in the city.

Blood banks face a sharp decline in blood donations during summer and Diwali vacation since people travel out of town.

On Wednesday, the Assistant Director (BT), SBTC had written a mail to the various BMC-run blood banks and their incharge to arrange camps on railway station and other places to overcome the shortage of blood in various banks.

The decision of arranging blood donation camps was decided and planned in the Voluntary Blood Donation (VBD) Committee meeting of SBTC.

Speaking about the order, an RTI activist, who filed the RTI application related to blood banks, said, "Every year there is a shortage of blood during summer and Diwali vacation. Blood donation camps are organised in schools, colleges, societies but during vacations, many people tend to go out of town and the educational institutions are closed for vacations. Since the issue is repeated every year, the government authority must strategise and come up with a plan of action to oversome the blood shortage issue every year."

The letter also mentions the blood bank to ensure adequate availability of blood in every blood banks.

"Blood collected at blood donation camps at the railway stations are hardly 30-40 bottles. The eight- hour camps at the railway stations should be the last resort because the people donating the blood do not have much time as the health staff need to examine their health condition before proceeding for donation," added the activist.
