Keep your water usage in check from now on as the BMC is all set to fine societies or establishments which use more than the fixed amount of water provided to them.

A day after the decision to carry on with the current 20 per cent water cut was taken at the standing committee meeting, senior civic officials from the hydraulic engineering department said that the civic body is in the process of drafting a proposal according to which residential societies, commercial and industrial establishments must adhere to the stipulated amount of water or pay a hefty fine. Once the proposal is passed by the standing committee, BMC will begin imposing the penalties, the amount for which is yet to be decided.

Currently, the civic body provides 135 litres of water per person daily to residential societies, whereas in slums, the amount is 45 litres per person. Hotels are provided 135 litres of water per bed, while restaurants are allowed 70 litres per table daily.

"When the BMC implemented a 20 per cent water cut due to insufficient water levels at the reservoirs, we didn't receive many complaints. This proves that the water which residents are currently receiving is enough for their daily requirements," said a senior civic official.

"Residents often use more than 135 litres of water, some up to 165 or 170 litres too. They are willing to pay for the excess water they use. But taking into consideration the water crisis this year, they should save water," he added.
