Ever heard of saving an animal from sacrifice and earning thousands of rupees? A recent intelligence input received by the special branch of the city police stated that in order to save cattle from slaughtering, an organisation has announced a reward of Rs3,000 per saved cattle. This information, say intelligence sources, has gone viral on the social media and could affect the law and order situation in the city during the upcoming Bakri Eid festival.

What does the intel say?
The intelligence report states that Ahinsa Sangh, Vishwamaitri Trust have distributed pamphlets which say that for the purpose of sacrifice, animals are being ferried from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhatisgarh. The group has invited people to join a 'Life Saving Operation' of animals and listed its phone numbers.

What is the reward for?
The police sources said the organisation claimed that those who would be successful in their attempts would be rewarded Rs3,000 for each animal saved. The website of the organisation also mentions that they have announced various rewards for rescuing animals meant for slaughter, charity schemes for animals and students and tries to influence people to become vegetarians.

Has it gone viral?
Yes, the said information has gone viral on WhatsApp and social media. "Any information on the internet that is likely to cause a law and order problem are blocked by us and we take action accordingly. In such cases we blocked the website and registered a cognizable offence. In any case the police will have adequate bandobast at sensitive places to maintain proper law and order," said Mumbai police' spokesperson and deputy commissioner of police Dhananjay Kulkarni.

What will the cops do?
"This can lead to a law and order situation. Hence senior inspectors of all police stations, assistant and zonal deputy commissioners have been asked to stay vigilant during three days of Bakri Eid. We are also investigating who all are circulating this information on the social media," said a senior officer from Mumbai police.

Which are the sensitive routes?
The police in their report have also stated that animals are transported into the city through Dahisar, Vashi, Airoli, Mulund checknakas. "Organisations such as Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and other Hindu organisations such as Gauraksha Samiti and Jeevdaya Mandali have raised opposition to sacrifice of animals. This could lead to tension in the city. All those police stations under whose jurisdiction check nakas come have been asked to deploy adequate bandobast to avert any untoward incident," said the officer.
