It came as a shock to airport housekeeping staffer Sweta Satpal, who was on duty inside the washroom outside gate 78, when she heard cries coming from one of the toilet cubicles on Tuesday.

On inspection, she found a 20-year-old foreigner in labour, sitting on the toilet seat and giving birth to a baby boy, who was half out. She immediately alerted the airport staff, after which two staff women doctors went to the washroom.

"The doctors helped the woman get up to deliver the baby, making sure that the newborn did not fall in the commode," said an airport insider.

The incident happened at 1.56pm, airport officials said. The woman, identified as Hayas Alhagbani Saud, was later taken to SevenHills Hospital in Andheri (East) in an airport ambulance, with one more doctor to accompany her.

Airport sources said the situation for Saud, a Saudi Arabia national, would have been more trying had her flight to Riyadh, scheduled at 12.45pm, been on time. She had been at the airport waiting for the flight, which had got delayed by five hours. "Had the flight been on time, she would have gone in labour onboard, and then the plane would have had to return or make an emergency landing at some other airport," said a source.

As per the information available with airport authorities, Saud, her mother, brother and sister had arrived in Mumbai from Hyderabad. They were supposed to take an Air India flight to Riyadh.

Sources revealed that Saud's mother, who is married to a Saudi national, belonged to Hyderabad and the family had come to India to visit relatives.
