During his interrogation, Indrani Mukerjea's ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna is believed to have given an absurd statement, claiming that he was fast asleep in the car on the day of the incident and only woke up to see Sheena Bora dead.

Khanna was nabbed by a team of Mumbai police on Wednesday in connection with his alleged involvement in Sheena's murder. The Mumbai police were granted his five-day transit remand till September 1 by the Alipore court in Kolkata on Thursday. The police had prayed for seven-day transit remand.

Khanna's counsel Selim Rahman had prayed for conditional bail, which was turned down by the judge. Rahman had argued that he gone to Mumbai to meet his daughter Vidhie Mukerjea and was not a part of the crime that was committed. "Khanna had reached Mumbai on April 24 to meet his daughter. For some reason, he could not meet her and returned on April 25," the lawyer had said.

"The court has sent him to five-day transit remand. The Mumbai police put forth substantial evidence, and driver Shyam Rai's statement also revealed his direct involvement," said Sourin Ghosal, police prosecutor, Alipore Court.
Khanna was picked up from his friend Ajay Rawla's place on Belvedere Road of South Kolkata's posh Alipore area by a joint team comprising Mumbai and Kolkata police officers.

"The Mumbai police had approached us for help. We immediately formed a team and started working with them," special additional and joint commissioner of police (crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh told dna.

Around 2pm, a team comprising Mumbai police officers reached Khanna's residence at Hastings in the southern fringes of Kolkata, only to find out that he wasn't home. The police seized two laptops, two mobile phones, one NRI passport, one Great Britain passport and one North Ireland passport. The police are likely to examine all these. He was later traced to Rawla's home.

Since his arrest, the Mumbai police have interrogated him in three phases. According to sources, Khanna confessed to being present in Mumbai on April 24, 2012, the day Sheena was allegedly murdered. "Khanna admitted that Indrani, Rai and Sheena were present in the car, but claimed that he was fast asleep and, when he woke up, he saw that Sheena was dead," said an officer who questioned him.
