The Bandra magistrate court on Friday remanded Indrani Mukerjea's ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna in three-day police custody. The accused was arrested from Kolkata and brought on transit remand to Mumbai for his alleged role in the Sheena Bora murder case.

Sheena was allegedly strangulated and her body later set on fire in Pen, Raigad on April 24, 2012.

Clad in a yellow shirt, Khanna was produced before the additional chief metropolitan magistrate SM Chandagade around 1.30pm. When the magistrate questioned Khanna, asking if he had any complaints against the police, he replied in the negative. The prosecution then sought Khanna's police custody.

Advocate Laxman Rathod, the prosecutor, said the police want to take the accused to the spot to find out if any more people are involved in the case. "The prosecution wants to find out how the accused thought of the location to dispose of the body. Khanna had played an active role in the murder," said Rathod.

However, defence advocate SR Mithare pleaded with the court to remand him in judicial custody.

The court, after going through the arguments, remanded the accused in police custody till August 31.

Mithare had earlier approached the court, seeking permission to provide him with home food and clothes in police custody, but it was denied, with the court saying these applications could be made when the accused was sent to judicial custody.

Khanna has been charged under sections 364 (kidnapping), 302 (murder), 201 (destruction of evidence) and 120 (b) (hatching conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.

The police had recovered a laptop, mobile phone and passport of the accused. They are, however, yet to recover information from the articles.
