Sanjeev Bhasin to head the Western Naval Command

Vice admiral Sanjeev Bhasin will be the new flag officer, commanding-in-chief of the Western Naval Command from May 1. Bhasin will take over from vice admiral JS Bedi who retires on April 30.

A graduate of the 38th NDA course, Bhasin was commissioned into the executive branch of the Indian Navy in January 1972. A specialist in navigation and aircraft direction, he has served as navigating officer on a variety of fleet ships. After completing his specialist tenures, he was posted as squadron commander at the Nigerian Naval Academy at Port Harcourt.

Bhasin holds the distinction of commissioning two ships as the commanding officer, the missile corvette INS Khukri and the guided missile destroyer, INS Mumbai. The Admiral has also commanded the missile destroyer, INS Ranjit.

On promotion to the rank of rear admiral on January 1, 2002, the flag officer served as ACOP (HRD) at NHQ, chief of staff, Western Naval Command and flag officer commanding, Eastern Fleet.

He was promoted to the rank of vice admiral in November 2006 and was appointed director general seabird (Karwar Naval Base) prior to taking over as deputy chief, Integrated Defence Staff at HQ Integrated Defence Staff (HQIDS) in January 2007.

The Admiral later took over as commandant of the National Defence College in October 2007. He was officer on special duties to the chief of naval staff before being appointed as the flag officer commanding-in-chief of the Western Naval Command.

Admiral Bhasin is a graduate of the United States Naval War College and College of Naval Warfare, Mumbai.

For distinguished services of exceptional order, he has been awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal in 2003 and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2006.
