Mumbai Congress president Sanjay Nirupam on Monday reiterated his demand for the immediate suspension of BMC chief Ajoy Mehta over the Kamala Mills fire incident.

Nirupam also demanded setting up of either the central bureau of investigation (CBI) inquiry or the judicial probe in the Kamala Mills fire incident where 14 people died and several were injured.

Nirupam said as per the Mumbai Fire Brigade's preliminary probe report, the fire had started at Mojo's Bistro and spread across adjoining restaurants including 1 Above pub. "Despite this fact, the police took nine days to arrest the director of Bistro bar.

However, of the six owners in the bar, five owners are from Nagpur and they connected well connected to BJP MLA from Nagpur. This Nagpur group is famous for turning the black money into white money," alleged Nirupam.

"Why the government is protecting the owners? Even the chief minister Devendra Fadnavis is also involved. The money trail has to be investigated. Ajoy Mehta should be first suspended and high level inquiry should be conducted either by CBI or judicial probe," Nirupam demanded.

Nirupam also said that Mehta had claimed that he was pressurised by a politician to not take action against the illegal constructions. "We demand that commissioner Mehta should disclose the name. People should know the truth and we also ask for actions to be taken against the politician who invested in 17 hotels in Mumbai. If commissioner is not disclosing the name, then he should withdraw his statement and extend an apology," he said.

When contacted Ajoy Mehta, he was not available for comment.
