Ravindra, Mumbai's oldest captive lion, who for the past two weeks was under constant medical supervision at Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) for a leg wound, is said to be out of danger.

The 15-year-old big cat was undergoing treatment for hematoma, a kind of abscess, on left foreleg.

Veterinary officer Dr Shailesh Pethe said the lion has now been eating well and following his routine, which indicated he is recuperating.

"We were worried because of his advanced age. A lot of precautions were taken. He was monitored round the clock. It's good news he has responded well to the treatment and is now stable," Pethe said, adding that a team of vets were consulted throughout the treatment.

He said the wound on Ravindra's leg is yet to be completely healed "but since he is moving around in his secondary cage, we are assuming it has started healing."

Ravindra was brought to SGNP in 2009 with lioness Shobha, from Bengaluru. Shobha died of a prolonged illness in 2014. The park two other lions, Jespa and Gopa, both seven.
